Jacqueline Surdell's sculptures emerge from the meticulous manipulation of dock cord, an industrial material knotted and woven into naturalistic, wall-mounted, and spatially assertive structures—blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Utilizing her body as a shuttle, the artist improvisationally weaves dock-cord around found metal structures that provide a loom, a starting point, for organic sculptural forms dictated by the eye and rhythm of her hands, arms and body. Her emotional energy combined with light and shadow, gravity and weight, charts an energetic route towards a final abstraction. Resulting in objects that remain compulsively open ended.
